독일 조기유학 교육과정
독일의 대부분의 학교는 주에서 운영하는 공립학교이며 각각의 주마다 다른 교육 정책을 가지고 있기 때문에 아래에서 서술하는 내용이 절대적인 것은 아니고 수많은 예외가 존재한다. 공립학교 이외에도 공교육과 같은 교육을 제공하는 종교재단의 사립학교들이나, 수준이 더 높은 IB나 영국의 A-Level을 가르치는 학비가 매우 비싼 귀족학교들도 상당수 존재한다. 공립대학의 경우 학비를 안 받거나, 받더라도 한국 돈으로 80만 원 정도밖에 안 한다. 물론 이는 선별적 교육과정을 운영하기에 가능한 측면이 많긴 하지만.
독일의 어린이들은 만 6살부터 의무교육과정으로 초등학교에 입학하는데 초등학교는 4년제로 읽기, 쓰기, 산수와 같은 기초교육을 비롯하여 음악, 미술, 스포츠 과목을 배우는 외에도 공동체학습과 질서의 준수 등을 습득한다. 이밖에도 합창, 배구, 악기 다루기 같은 특별활동시간도 주당 2시간 정도 있으며 하루의 수업시간은 반나절 정도 된다. 초등학교를 마친 후에는 상급학교로 진학하게 되는데, 진학 가능한 학교의 종류는 3가지가 있다. 9년 과정의 김나지움(일반계 학교), 6년 과정의 레알슐레(실업학교), 5년 과정의 하웁트슐레(직업학교). 연방통계청의 자료에 따르면 진학자의 비율은 김나지움 33%, 레알슐레 27%, 하웁트슐레 24%, 게잠트슐레 및 발도르프슐레 10%, 기타 7% 로 나타났다.
김나지움에서는 고대 그리스어, 영어, 프랑스어, 라틴어, 러시아어, 스페인어를 외국어로 배우며, 영어는 영국식 영어를 배운다.
이렇게 초등학교 4학년 때 한번 물갈이를 하기 때문에, 학생의 수준 자체가 한국과 비교시 다르다고 보면 되며, 실제 독일 일부 주의 김나지움의 수업 수준은 미적분을 고1 때 배우기 시작하는 등 한국보다 1-2년이 빠르다. 이러한 정책은 4학년 이후에 벌써 진로가 상당 수준 결정되는 것이 너무 이른 것이 아닌가, 교육 제도 상으로 유리천장을 조장하는 것은 아닌가 하는 비판을 받기도 한다. 성적은 1등급에서 6등급까지로 매겨지고(1등급은 매우 좋음, 5등급 이하는 낙제) 김나지움 졸업반 때는 2개의 주요과목을 선정하는데, 1점이 최하점, 15점이 최고점으로 매겨진다. 학기 말에 5등급이 2개 있거나 또는 6등급짜리 과목이 하나라도 있다면 예외 없이 유급된다. 그리고 두 번 유급되면 3번째는 없다. 졸업장도 없이 학교에서 쫓겨난다.
김나지움은 과정을 수료하고 졸업 시험에 성공적으로 합격하면 아비투어(Abitur)라는 학력 증서를 받게 된다. 이 증서는 해당인이 전인교육을 받았으며 앞으로 어떠한 전문 교육도 받을 능력이 있다는 증서다. 이 증서를 받은 사람은 자연과학이나 인문과학 분야 대학에 아무런 제약 없이 진학할 수 있는 자격을 얻게 되며 자격은 평생 유효하다. 레알슐레는 과정을 수료하고 졸업 시험에 성공적으로 합격하면 미틀러레라이페(Mittlere Reife)라는 학력 증서를 받게된다. 이 증서를 가진 사람은 곧바로 대학 진학은 못하지만 일반 교양 지식을 가진 사람으로서 사무직이나 행정직 직업을 배운 후 업무를 수행할 능력이 있다는 증서이다. 레알슐레 졸업 후 김나지움에 편입하여 아비투어를 취득하거나 2년간의 직업교육 뒤에 파흐호흐슐라이페(Fachhochschulreife)를 취득하여 파흐호흐슐레로 진학할 수 있다. 하웁트슐레는 과정을 수료하고 졸업 시험에 성공적으로 합격하면 하웁트슐압슐루스(Hauptschulabschluss) 증서를 받게 되는데, 이 증서는 직업을 배우기 위한 최소한의 학력은 소지하고 있다는 증서다. 이 증서는 직업을 배우기 위한 최소한의 전제 조건이다. 물론 하웁트슐레 졸업 후 레알슐레로 편입하여 미틀러레 라이페(Mittlere Reife)를 취득할 수도 있다.
레알슐레와 하웁트슐레는 졸업하고 나면 일반 기업과 직업학교에서 이원화된 직업교육을 받을 수 있고 이 과정을 마치고 각 지방의 상공회의소에서 주관하는 직업 자격시험에 합격하면 정식으로 취업이 가능하다. 이후 원하는 학생들은 마이스터 과정을 밟을 수 있다. 김나지움을 마치고 나면 졸업시험을 치르고 종합대학에 진학할 수 있다. 대학교는 일반 종합대학(Universität), 파흐호흐슐레(Fachhochschule)[9], 음악대학(Musikhochschule), 미술/예술 대학(Kunstakademie) 등으로 나뉜다.
